Distance To The Horizon’, Today Is The First Day, Wolfgang Tillmans For ‘Rebuilding The Future’,
IMMA Dublin
Distance to the Horizon was written in response to Wolfgang Tilmans ‘Rebuilding the Future’ exhibition, at IMMA, Dublin from 28th October
2018- 17th Feburay 2019.The exhibition was a retrospective solo show, exploring time and encompassing the wide range of Wolfgang Tillmans’ practice including installation, photography, video and sound work.
The text responds specifically to the proliferation of hope, humanity and horizons in Tilmans’ work. With the photograph ‘Elephant Man’
specifically in mind, the responding text takes the form of a hybridized personal essay and poetic response. It draws on the powerful, poetic themes within Tilmans’ work on time, freedom of movement and connection with others.

Excerpt of text from ‘Today Is The First Day’ publication, 2019
It was written during the tense, political limbo of Brexit talks and addresses the direct experience of movement across the contested Irish border and the changing nature of Northern Ireland’s post-conflict generation.
The text was published in the retrospective publication of Tilmans' work, co-produced by IMMA Dublin and Wiels, Brussels for exhibitions ‘Rebuilding The Future’ (IMMA) and ‘Today Is The First Day’ (Wiels).
