Cocooned in White Leaves

‘Cocooned in White Leaves' stems from a period of severe nerve/back pain that resulted in being mostly bedbound. The photos explore the relationship between the crip bed space and the body, stasis and regrowth, chronic pain and methods of relief. Rudimentary clay leaves were placed along nerve paths which shot with pain and caused involuntary twitches. The coolness of the wet clay provided pain relief as it dried.

These leaf patterns of pain were sometimes replicated on the bed, imprinting where the body and pain paths had been.

These images explore the interwoven connection between the crip bed and the bedbound body.
The imprint of the body left in bedsheets, a twisted duvet referencing a twisted spine, attuned to wrinkles of fabric and patterns of light.

All photos were taken on a phone in one bedroom, aside from one photo at the physio. Recently exhibited as part of ‘Take Hold’ at CCA Derry, a photo book is forthcoming.
